DescriptionAmong the first wallpapers imported to America were designs of small continuous repeat, popularized in France by the Dominotiers and in England by Hugo Goes and William Bayly. Records of these block-printed patterns date back to 1481, but not until the early eighteenth century were they used in homes along the Atlantic seaboard. John Phillips, Boston bookseller, advertised "stampt paper in rolls, for to paper rooms" in 1730. As one of the first merchants to stock wallpaper in this country, the paper is named for him.
