CategoryHistoric Reproductions
DescriptionHere is a reproduction of a Late Empire French paper found in the Holland Land Office Building in Batavia, New York. Joseph Ellicott was the agent of the Holland Land Company and had the office building erected in 1815. This business was started when Robert Morris bought from the State of Massachusetts the territory on either side of the Genesee River. In 1798 he deeded the three and one-half million acres to the Holland Land Company. Overnight Batavia became the center of great excitement as settlers swarmed to the little town, purchasing land or making payments on land already purchased.
